Magnesium:

Magnesium is literally involved in hundreds of important chemical reactions in your body such as regulating blood sugar and insulin, transmitting nerve impulses, regulating temperature, liver detoxification, and it is even part of the formation of bones and teeth. Unfortunately, women with PCOS are 19x more likely to have a magnesium deficiency compared to women without PCOS

Zinc:

Hair thinning/loss is a symptom of high androgen levels in women with PCOS. A percentage of your testosterone is converted into a much more potent androgen called DHT (dihydrotestosterone).

It's this DHT that blocks the hair follicle cycle leading to hair thinning and loss, especially on the scalp. Zinc helps to block this conversion, thus, helping to reduce hair loss

  • Magnesium:

The effect of magnesium supplementation on metabolic profiles and levels of hormones, thus clinical symptoms, in PCOS

Taken from Biological trace element research -- In a parallel randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial 60 women with PCOS aged 20–45 years were recruited. Participants were randomly assigned to consume magnesium supplements (containing 250 mg magnesium oxide) or placebo for 8 weeks. After the 8 weeks of magnesium supplementation among women with PCOS the following was found:

  • • Favourable effects on BMI compared with placebo group
  • • A decrease in waist circumference
  • • Increase in serum luteinizing hormone (LH) levels - crucial for ovulation
  • •.A marginally significant decrease was found in serum testosterone (androgen) levels - compared with placebo group
  • Final note & summary: Magnesium supplementation resulted in reduced BMI and testosterone levels as well as increased DHEA concentrations in women with PCOS. Also, magnesium supplementation may increase serum LH levels.

    Zinc:

The effect zinc has on inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

Taken from Nutrients -- PCOS is associated with a distinct increase in global activity of 5α-reductase and this leads to an enhanced conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) - the more potent form of testosterone. Zinc is considered an anti-androgen by inhibiting 5α-reductase and thus decreasing the production of DHT.
